Summer 2016 Restaurant Recommendations

As we have tried most restaurants in Whitby and the surrounding areas, we can recommend some great places to eat during your holidays. There are loads, so you will have plenty of choice!

As we have tried most restaurants in Whitby and the surrounding areas, we can recommend some great places to eat during your holidays.  There are loads, so you will have plenty of choice!  It does of course depend on what type of thing you like and what the budget is, but here are a few suggestions:

  • £-££      - Teare Woods - Friday night tapas are wonderful and highly recommended in this almost secret dining location.  The rest of the week it is a café and doesn't open in the evening.  The best ice cream in Whitby, as they have their own jersey cows up on the Moors and make all their own ice cream.
  • ££-£££  - Harry's Bar and Restaurant - great for 'English tapas' style food or for good steaks.  Does the best cocktails in Whitby too!
  • ££          - The Moon and Sixpence - great atmosphere with really good quality bar meals.  Lovely views of the harbour.  We tend to go here for more informal dining or if we want a few drinks before a meal
  • £-££      - Moutreys - fantastic stone-baked pizzas in a real wood fired oven.  I'm not keen on their pasta dishes, but their pizzas and puddings are terrific.
  • £££        - The Marine - I find their menu a little dull, but great for oysters and lobster.  Live pianist on Saturday evenings
  • ££          - The Magpie fish restaurant - not pretty surroundings but can perfectly cook any fish, in any way you would like!  Most people have fish and chips, but I suggest getting those from Hadleys or Mister Chips and trying something different at the Magpie.  We like the halibut or monk fish and garlic potatoes.  Book ahead if you can, as queues are very long at peak times!
  • £££        - The White Horse and Griffin - fantastic good quality British dishes and decent wine
  • ££££     - for a very special occasion, prebook the Fox and Hounds a month in advance at least!  Pricey, but the chef came from The Ivy in London and it's a very foody destination.  A bit outside Whitby: Goldsborough, Whitby YO21 3RX

For Friday and Saturday nights, please make sure you prebook at least a week in advance as you will struggle for tables at peak times otherwise.  The Fox and Hounds only has about 6 tables, so book about a month before at least!
